After another trip to the stream, the pups got to experience deeper water for the first time. They all swam like fishes!

Vet check and weights
Getting caught up on updates. This is from the breeder regarding the pups 6 week check ups on May 6th:
“Our Vacuums and Transformers are 6 weeks old today…. so all 20 puppies went to the vet for their checkups. I’ve been dreading this all week (can you imagine the racket that 20 puppies could potentially make?) but miraculously, they were some of the BEST behaved puppies we’ve ever had! Before their checkup, the puppies had lunch, a big play, and a bath, and then were bundled into crates for the 25 minute journey into town… spent about an hour and half at the vet clinic, and then returned home- barely a peep the whole time! I’ve taken some pictures (while they are all squeaky clean) that I’ll post later, but here are their official 6 week weights: Kimber’s puppies- Pyra- 4.8 lbs, Swipe- 5.28 lbs, Arcee- 5.5 lbs, Minerva, Springer and Mangus – 6.6 lbs, Ratchet 6.8 lbs, Wheelie and Cliff- 7 lbs, and OP 7.26 lbs. Shelby’s pups- Eureka-5.28 lbs, Roomba- 5.5 lbs, Neato 5.72 lbs, Bissell and Oreck 6.38 lbs, Shark 6.6 lbs, Dirt Devil and Dyson – 6.8 lbs, Kirby – 7 lbs, and Hoover 7.26 lbs.”
They also had their first experience with water on a walk to the little stream:
Playtime!
The puppies have been busy! They are learning, exploring and exercising. Here is a silent video clip of them playing in the toy filled living room (just the ‘super suckers’ litter): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yEmSRul4KTI

Puppy area
Dazzle likes the puppy area I just set up next to my desk 🙂 He went right in and laid down and took a nap after I took this photo. He has a very good association with confinement that I will also hopefully teach Voodoo. The puppies just turned 5 weeks old today, so only 3.5 weeks till Voodoo is home! Voo will hang out in here while I post updates on his progress and check on line communications. There will be a crate, his mat and some toys. He can get rewarded for relaxing in his own space while I’m visible, choosing to go in his crate, laying on his mat, etc.

Having a puppy/dog that can relax in confinement even when they can see you helps a great deal later in life at dog shows/trials where the dog will need to be in a crate and may be within view of you or might be right next to you. It is also where I will start the “sharing” exercises where I say each dog’s name before giving them a treat, so he starts to learn that confinement can mean “free cookies” just for watching another dog work/get cookies, but won’t be able to try to steal a cookie from Dazzle. I’ll also eventually add brief periods of going out of sight that will gradually be extended so he can learn to be relaxed even if he can’t see me. All great things for puppies to learn!
Grouse wings
Yesterday the puppies were introduced to grouse wings. This is important for any of them that might do field work (retrieving birds), so that having a wing in their mouth is not something odd. Wings have a weird texture and consistency (smooth parts, stiff parts, squishy parts, hard parts, moves weirdly when chomped, has a distinctive odor, etc.) Some dogs find them off putting while others want to just shred them. Introducing them very young helps them get accustomed to carrying them around.
Hoover was having too much fun with the wing and was too fast for the camera to focus 🙂 So he got a candid shot.

Kirby- too cute!

And a not so big chomp

Outside playtime
The litter got to enjoy some time in the warm outdoors and they wore themselves out! Plus, they are getting teeth!

First non-milk meal
April 18th (2 days over 3 weeks old) the “super suckers” had their first taste of real food. Kirby wasn’t very impressed, but the others were loving it!

3 weeks old!
The pups are already 3 weeks old! Hoover was the first one in the litter to escape the whelping box (at 2.5 weeks old) and then he defeated the separation system and went to nurse with one of the other moms 🙂 Eyes are open and they are starting to have an interest in playing with toys. Here are some photos from Saturday.

The puppies born 6 weeks ago got to go for a swim today and I look forward to seeing the photos/video of this litter in a few weeks when they get to do the same! I just set up Dazzle’s pool, so it will be ready when Voodoo wants to go for a swim 🙂 But I’ll also set up a baby pool for him to splash around in.
